The Republic of Moldova has initiated the update of the low-emissions development strategy until 2030, with EU support

Best practices in developing long-term low-emission development strategies in the EU and Eastern Partnership countries are examined in a regional webinar, organized on 19-20 October by the EU4Climate Project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The event is attended by representatives from Eastern Partnership member countries, the European Commission, the Energy Community, the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the European Environment Agency and the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations.

Participants examined the current situation in the Member States of the European Union, a world leader in combating climate change, with a focus on best practices and the integration of climate change issues into sectoral policies. The Energy Community presented the stages of the National Energy and Environment Plans and the actions planned for next year.

Low-emission development strategies constitute the national instrument for implementing the National Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement and, respectively, for reaching the target of mantaining global warming below 2 / 1.5 ° C by the end of the century.

The Republic of Moldova has initiated the process of updating the Development Strategy with low emissions by 2030 based on the updated, more ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gases set out in the National Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement, presented to the UNFCCC Secretariat in March 2020.

The strategy will be developed with the support of the EU4Climate Project and will address the main sectors responsible for greenhouse gas emissions: energy, industry, agriculture, transport, buildings, forestry and waste management, as well as the actions to be taken within these sectors for reaching the target of 70% unconditional and 88% conditional GHG emission reductions compared to 1990.

The EU4Climate initiative is funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme. The project supports countries in implementing the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and improving climate policy and legislation. Its ambition is to limit the effects of climate change and make citizens more resilient to them. It will assist the Eastern Partnership countries to integrate low-emission and climate resilience objectives into development policies and plans, to improve and strengthen climate policies and legislative alignment.
